2018 Union County Fair Book

This year the Union County Fair Book is being provided to you on our website in individual sections and on the Union County Extension website.  This is in response to several requests for us to make it easier for you to find the information you need quickly without having to download the entire fair book to your pc or mobile device.  One printed copy of the full fair book will be provided by extension to each 4-H family at no cost. Additional copies of the full print fair book can be made on request at the Extension Office for $5 each.

Union County Fair Queen/Princess Contestants

The 2018 Union County Fair will be celebrating its 54th anniversary of crowning the Union County Fair
Queen and the tenth annual Princess contest to recognize the exceptional young ladies in our community.
Contestants may enter through Sunday, June 10, with judging scheduled for the afternoon of July 15 th .
The coronation will be held on Thursday, July 19th , at the Union County Fairgrounds in Afton.
Each queen contestant must be at least 16 years of age and not exceeding 21 years of age by August 9,
2018. Interested individuals for the queen contest must never have been married. Contestants must reside
in Union County or an adjoining county if the majority of her activities are in Union County. She must
also be an active member of at least one worthwhile organization such as FFA, FBLA, a church group or
4-H. The winner of the queen contest will receive a $250 college scholarship, crown, sashes, trophy, and

Princess contestants must be at least 6 years of age and not more than 8 years of age, also by August 9,
2018. The selected princess will also receive a crown, sashes, and trophy. Each princess candidate will be
awarded a sash recognizing their participation in the contest.

An organization, church, business, or individual must sponsor each candidate. Entry fee is $25 for queen
candidates and $10 for princess contestants. This must be paid by the sponsor at the time of entry. The
Union County Fair Queen and Princess reign over the events at the Union County Fairgrounds from July
19th-25th. The queen will represent Union County at the 2018 Iowa State Fair Queen contest with
judging dates August 7-13 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Young women and girls interested in entering the contests are encouraged to email or mail the application

ISSB, Donation towards Capital Campaign

ISSB Donates $75,000 to Union County Fair

Iowa State Savings Bank has announced the bank will be donating $75,000.00 over a five-year period to the Union County Fair. ISSB is a lead sponsor of the Fair’s “Building on Tradition” Capital Campaign. Their donation will help enhance the fairgrounds and provide modern facilities to promote youth development and create educational, social, cultural and economic opportunities for Union County. As a leading sponsor, the new show pavilion will be called the Iowa State Savings Bank Show Pavilion.

FNB, Conover Donation

FNB, Conovers donate $75K toward Union County Fairground project

AFTON May 9th— The Union County Fair Board received more good news this week.

On Monday, First National Bank and the Conover family donated $75,000 toward the board’s “Building on Tradition” capital campaign to upgrade facilities at the Union County Fairgrounds in Afton. This money will be given to the project over a 5-year period.

Friends of 4-H Donation

The Union County Fairgrounds fundraising effort received a big boost last week when the Union County Friends of 4-H Inc. announced a pledge of $30,000 toward the “Building on Tradition” project.

“Building on Tradition” is the fundraising campaign launched Feb. 1 to raise $1.5 million for a renovation project on the Union County Fairgrounds in Afton.
